On Monday, September 24, the Northern Humboldt Union High School District (NHUHSD) Career Frontiers program, in partnership with the Humboldt County Office of Education Trades Academy invites local high school students, parents and members of the community to learn about the variety of opportunities and careers in the trades.

According to the Employment Development Department, Workforce Services Branch, the North Coast Region (Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, and Lake) employment demand within the trades is projected to increase up to 67% by the year 2022.

The top 15 occupations by job openings are in high demand and accessible with on-the-job training during or beyond high school. These top occupations include:  Carpenters; Construction Laborers; Operating Engineers; Electricians; Painters; Plumbers; Roofers; First-Line Construction Supervisors; Highway Maintenance Workers; Cement Masons and Concrete Finishers; Construction and Building Inspectors; Paving, Surfacing and Tamping Equipment Operators; Sheet Metal Workers; Earth Drillers; and Dry Wall and Ceiling Tile Installers.

Jobs in the trades pay significantly more than the average wages of most entry-level workers in Humboldt County.

The September 24 panel will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Arcata High School (AHS) Library. Guest panelists include Dale Maples, Maples Service; Chris Albright, O&M Industries; Tony Lucchesi, Pacific Builders; and Kerry Mayer, Career Education Dean at College of the Redwoods. This panel event is open to all members of the community, not just those that attend AHS.

Panelists will share their expertise, insight and information about the value and vast opportunities open to students interested in working in the trades. This event will also provide information to students and families about the Trades Academy, a new program of the Humboldt County Office of Education designed to enhance student knowledge through high quality hands-on learning, industry fieldtrips, access to industry professionals, and opportunities to earn certifications. The Trades Academy mobile lab will be on-site for viewing so arrive early to take advantage of this opportunity.
