After School Consortium/Redwood Afterschool Network
The Humboldt County Office of Education works with seventeen local schools in ten districts supporting and promoting the development and implementation of after school programs in Humboldt County. Successful after school programs include academic support, homework help, tutoring, literacy programs, physical activity, recreation, enrichment activities, and nutritious snacks for students. Examples of enrichment activities include arts & crafts, cooking clubs, music, dance, games, gardening, and robotics. All programs are free or low-cost. No student is turned away due to inability to pay. Each after school program site is run by the school district.
Programs start at the close of the regular school day and are required to be open until at least 6 p.m. during regular school days. Some programs also have summer/vacation programming available for free or low cost, depending upon funding (state grant versus private pay). Consortium applications were submitted to the California Department of Education requesting After School Education and Safety Program (ASES) funding for schools with free and reduced lunch count percentages of 50% or higher. Funding is currently in place for Arcata, Blue Lake, Bridgeville, Cuddeback, Fortuna, Peninsula, Rio Dell, Rohnerville, Scotia, Southern Humboldt, and Trinidad school districts, and is renewed every three years. To enroll your child, please contact the school your students attends to find out about registration materials.
Humboldt County Office of Education staff works closely with other after school providers across the county and north coast region through the Redwood After School Network (RAN). RAN coordinates resources, offers staff development/training opportunities and provides opportunities for after school program staff to share best practices in order to further develop high quality after school programs for Humboldt County’s children. RAN is funded through the Region 1 Training and Technical Assistance grant with Mendocino County Office of Education. RAN meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month throughout the school year. Meetings are usually from 9:30 a.m. – noon, depending on meeting topic and/or agenda. HCOE and RAN also host an annual after school conference the first Saturday of March. Please call or email Beth Chaton for more information about the HCOE After School Consortium and/or Redwood After School Network.
