Humboldt County Office of Education is bringing you Learning in The Community!

Join us at The Minor Theater from 5pm-7pm for a community viewing and facilitated discussion panel on the PBS Series – Race: The Power of An Illusion.

This award-winning documentary discusses the origins, beliefs and consequences of what we call race. We will watch a one 1-hour episode and have a panel discussion facilitated by local educators. Educators, students, and the general public are welcome to this free series. You can register for any or all three evenings at hcoe.org/events or via the QR code.

Episode 1 | The Difference Between Us  | Sept. 23

The first hour of the series shows that despite what we’ve always believed, the world’s peoples simply don’t come bundled into distinct biological groups.

Episode 2 | The Story We Tell | Sept. 30

The invention of race is only a few hundred years old, and the history and evolution of the idea are deeply tied to the development of the U.S.

Episode 3 | The House We Live In | Oct. 7

We focus on the ways our institutions and policies invisibly accrue advantages to some due to the racialized nature of our laws, customs, and housing.
