What are Family Literacy Kits?
Family Literacy Kits are helpful guides made specifically for families in Humboldt County. They are designed to make it easy for parents and caregivers to support their child’s reading and literacy development at home — no teaching experience needed! Designed for educational stages: birth to TK, K-2, 3-6, and 7th to 12th grade, these kits align with research-backed strategies that caregivers can seamlessly integrate into family routines.
What’s inside the kits?
Each kit is a printed booklet that walks families through simple, practical ways to build literacy at home, including:
- Reading Aloud — Tips on how to read aloud with your child in a way that keeps them engaged and helps them understand what they’re hearing.
- Learning Sounds — Activities to help children recognize and understand the sounds that make up words, which is a key building block for learning to read.
- Comprehension Prompts — Simple questions and conversation starters that parents and caregivers can use before, during, and after reading to help children think more deeply about what they’re reading. These prompts are designed to spark curiosity, check for understanding, and encourage kids to make connections to their own lives.
- Local Reading Resources — A guide to books, libraries, and other reading materials available right here in Humboldt County, so families know exactly where to go to find something to read.
- Activity Cards — Each kit comes with several activity cards that make learning fun and interactive for kids and their caregivers.
Who are the kits for?
The kits are designed for kids and families! There are several different grade levels, so the activities and tips are always age appropriate. Kits range between 16 and 32 pages long.
How do families get them?
The kits are designed to be passed out at Family Literacy Nights, giving families something useful to take home and use right away.
