What is the HERC?

The Humboldt Educational Resource Center is a place where teachers, school staff, and administrators can find support for many facets of their educational responsibilities.

HERC Library

Where is the HERC Library located?

Who can check out books from the HERC Library?

Practicing Humboldt County Educators at public school districts may exclusively check out materials from the HERC Library, or Humboldt County Educators

Why are HERC Library services only available to Teachers?

The HERC Library is a resource specifically designed to support local educators by providing a constant rotation of fresh reads to classrooms all over Humboldt County. Our collection is tailored to work with lesson plans, classroom read-alouds, and independent student reading. We operate at maximum capacity already, managing hundreds of book orders each year just for Humboldt County Educators!

What is included in HERC Library Services?

The HERC Library Team provides, curated, topic-specific book orders, classroom reading sets, rotating independent reading orders on 6-week cycles, and lesson-aligned book recommendations. Our Literacies and Learning Specialist also provides classroom library development support and library and media support to school libraries.

Book Processes

How do I order books for the HERC?

To order books, first look through the HERC Catalog (if you want specific titles), then visit the Order Materials page and place your order by using one of the methodologies listed.

How will I receive my book order?

Book orders will most often be sent to your school site through the HERC Courier Service. If your site does not opt into courier services, you will be personally responsible for picking up your book order from the HERC Library. Check with your administrator to learn if your site has opted into HERC Courier Services.

Where, at my site, will my book order be delivered?

Each site has its own designated area for courier delivery. Check with your site’s main office to learn about your site’s designated delivery location.

How do I return book orders?

Book orders can either be returned via courier by leaving book bins at your site’s designated courier area or dropped off at the HERC Library on the book return counter to the left of the library entrance.

How long can I check out books?

Books are checked out on a standard six-week basis (not including school breaks).

How can I extend a checkout period / renew my checkout?

If you wish to extend a checkout period / renew please email herc@hcoe.org with your Name, Site Name, Book/Material Title(s), and desired return date. Please wait for confirmation from our Library Team; sometimes (especially classroom sets) are on a tight circulation schedule and may not be available for extended checkout.

Does my site opt into HERC Courier Services?

Check with your site’s main office to learn about your site’s courier agreement. These agreements can change year by year so be sure to stay updated.

When does HERC Courier Service operate?

HERC Courier typically starts 1-2 weeks before the school year begins and ends 1-2 weeks after the last week of the school year.

How often does the courier deliver/pick-up?

The HERC Courier usually visits each site once a week.

Teacher Center

What is the Teacher Center?

The HERC Teacher Center is an open workspace for teachers to work on projects, grade papers, and have small group meetings.

Where is the Teacher Center?

How wide is the laminator?

The laminator is 24 inches wide.

Is the Teacher Center workspace reservable?

No, the Teacher Center area is first come, first serve.

What is the Teacher Center Store?

The Teacher Center Store is located in the Teacher Center. It’s a local resource for at-cost learning materials and craft supplies.

What is Learning Support Services?

LSS is the department that provides the services found within the HERC.

What does Learning Support Services offer/do?
