RAAM Supports Early Literacy Education in Humboldt County

On Tuesday, July 31, the community gathered in the Sequoia Conference Center to celebrate the accomplishments of Michael Davies-Hughes and Team Red Dragon for their participation in the Race Across America (RAAM). The race, recognized as the most challenging an arduous cycling competition in the world, spans 3,000 miles from Oceanside, California to Annapolis, Maryland and covered deserts, farmland, plains and mountains in freezing and 100+ degree temperatures. Davies-Hughes, a member of the Rotary Club of Southwest Eureka, is the Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services for Eureka City Schools. Farm to School Grant Will Enhance Student Access to Local Foods

Humboldt County Office of Education (HCOE), Nutrition Programs and Services recently received a Farm to School Grant totaling over 97,000 dollars from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Humboldt County was one of 14 out of 73 awardees within the western region of the U.S. to receive this competitive grant and one of only four awards in California. The USDA provides funding for planning grants, training grants, and implementation grants. HCOE was the only implementation grant that received funding in California. Funding will help bring nutritious, local foods into schools and create new economic development opportunities for famers....
