Dear Humboldt County Office of Education (HCOE) Families,
The current political climate has given rise to concern and uncertainty for some in our community. I want to reassure you that HCOE will continue to provide schools and programs that are safe spaces for every student. Regardless of their background, citizenship status, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other aspect of their identity, our students are welcome here. As noted in our Equity Statement, “HCOE is committed to equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging. We believe that the circumstances children are born into should not predict their access to the resources and rigor necessary for success. We are committed to building a culture of connectedness, allowing us to grow and learn better together. We see and celebrate the range of human differences as a source of strength. We welcome the unique contributions that each person brings.”
Under the U.S. Constitution, all students have a right to receive an education without discrimination based on immigration status. Our schools must provide free public education to all students regardless of their immigration status and regardless of the citizenship status of the students’ parents or guardians. California law similarly affirms the equal educational rights of immigrant students, and the California Constitution affirms that all students and staff, regardless of immigration status, “have the inalienable right to attend campuses which are safe, secure and peaceful.”
As we navigate these uncertain times, we value open communication and encourage you to reach out to your child’s program or school if you have questions or concerns. HCOE’s administrators, teachers and support staff are available to provide guidance and assistance to any student or family as needed.
I urge everyone in our community to continue supporting one another with kindness, compassion, empathy, and understanding, ensuring that HCOE’s programs and schools remain places where diversity is celebrated, and all students can thrive.
Thank you for entrusting us with your child’s education and well-being. We are honored to serve such a vibrant and diverse community, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to equity and inclusion for all.
HCOE has curated several resources to support families concerning immigration matters and LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC youth, which may be found at the links below.
With respect and in service to you,
Michael Davies-Hughes
Humboldt County Superintendent of Schools
