Independent Study Teacher

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION

    Classification: Certificated

    Independent Study Teachers for the Humboldt County Office of Education are certificated teachers who work directly with students, providing individualized instruction whether in a designated learning center or a public, distance learning environment, or private facility. Daily schedules require flexibility and may include direct instruction in person or via electronic in a manner consistent with California Ed. Code and with the master student agreement. Additional collaborative work may regularly take place with parents, coworkers, and administrators to ensure the high academic performance and achievement of these students.

    The teacher provides direct differentiated instruction to students and provides positive and consistent management and behavioral intervention and support. The teacher also completes all necessary paperwork as set forth by California Education Code, school policies, and procedures.

    EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

    Education and Experience

    • Appropriate current California credential
    • Bachelor’s degree
    • CLAD authorization or EL certification

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Prepares an educational plan
    • Supervises and approves coursework
    • Designs all lesson plans and assignments
    • Maintains records of student assignments showing the date the assignment is given and the date the assignment is due
    • Provides direct instruction necessary for individual student success
    • Regularly meets with students and/or families to discuss progress
    • Judges the time value of assigned work or work products completed and submitted by students as it relates to student attendance
    • Assesses student work and determines and assigns grades or other approved measures of achievement
    • Administers placement, formative and summative assessments
    • Selects saves and submits representative samples of the students’ completed and evaluated assignments for each subject, dated and graded in accordance required by the California Education Code and school policies and procedures
    • Utilizes appropriate materials to meet students’ identified needs
    • Adapts teaching methods based on students’ identified needs and sound principles of learning
    • Implements a program that provides continuity and consistency for students
    • Maintains proactive and positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and community members
    • Completes all required student-related paperwork in a timely manner (including but not limited to the following: enrollment forms, student agreements, learning records, attendance roll sheets, report cards, portfolios, drop forms, transfer forms, retention and promotion forms, academic probation forms)
    • Writes a comprehensive learning record, including goals, standards, and description of specific assignments
    • Follows all school policies and procedures
    • Follows all timelines set forth
    • Attend all required professional development and meetings
    • Attend all IEP and 504 meetings as required
    • Complete all mandated training

    •  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • Expertise in curriculum and instructional strategies
    • Knowledge of school policies and procedures
    • Knowledge of California Common Core State Standards
    • Knowledge of California Education Code
    • Ability to plan and teach individualized lessons for one-to-one instruction
    • Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with minimal supervision
    • Ability to initiate and keep to a working schedule with students, families, and fellow staff
    • Ability to compose and comprehend written communication. Ability to travel to Learning Centers
    • Mobility to traverse all areas of the worksite
    • Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software
    • Presents health, physical and mental fitness to engage in counseling service
    • Maintains regular and prompt attendance in the workplace

    Special note regarding the physical demands of teaching:  There is some degree of physical ability and exertion required of all teaching positions.  Over time, the physical demands of any position are subject to change.  Depending upon the particular assignment, teachers could be expected to:

    • Stand, sit and/or move about for sustained periods
    • Move about in non-traditional instructional environments; i.e., areas of the community
    • Report to multiple worksites on a given day or during the workweek
    • Communicate effectively in person and via telephone and other electronic media to individuals and groups of varying sizes
    • Exercise physical control over students who are acting out and/or offer physical assistance to students who might be themselves physically impaired
    • Conduct instructional programs within pre-designated break periods and time schedules
    • Maintain an appropriate personal demeanor during periods of heightened stress created by outside factors not always within the ability of the teacher to control at the time
