Scotia Elementary Secretary Wins State Award

(Eureka)—Trudi Walsh, School Secretary at Stanwood A. Murphy (Scotia Elementary School) has been chosen as one of California’s 2022 Classified School Employees of the Year. Trudi was one of 9 statewide winners who were honored by State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond.

Her nomination papers express that Trudi has worked as the school secretary for the past 8 years, but brings over 30 years of experience working for the school in other roles. She’s made an impact on the Stanwood A. Murphy community, improving it in several areas. Trudi wore several hats during her tenure, taking on the role of cheer coach, study trip chaperone, tutor, and trusted confidant by her students. Trudi works with the school’s regional counseling program to help provide services to students and their families. Trudi’s been known to make visits to student’s homes to hand deliver meals or care packages. She is also the coordinator of the school’s “Sunshine Fund,” which provides support to staff members and their families in time of need, as well as to students and their families.

Humboldt County Superintendent of Schools, Michael Davies-Hughes congratulated Ms. Walsh by saying, “Wow, Trudi! What a fantastic acknowledgement of your dedication to serving the students at Scotia. To be one of only nine classified employees across the state to be recognized in this way is something we can all celebrate! Congratulations!” Ms. Walsh was honored in the Clerical and Administrative Services category.

To be considered for the California Classified School Employees of the Year award, a selection committee evaluates the applications of County Award Winners using eligibility criteria and performance documentation in work performance, school and community involvement, leadership and commitment, local support from colleagues who speak to the nominee’s exemplary work, enhancement of classified school employee’s image in the community and the school, and any other areas the school deems exceptional and pertinent to the CSEY Award. Finalists are approved by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction or his designee.

This year’s recipients were chosen from 123 nominations statewide. The 2022 Classified School Employees of the Year will be honored by Thurmond at a luncheon in Sacramento on Thursday, May 19, 2022. County Award Winners will be celebrated on May 17th, locally.
