Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council – Applications Open

Eureka (Nov. 1, 2024) – The Humboldt County Office of Education (HCOE) is excited to announce a unique opportunity for high school students to join the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council.

This council aims to bring together voices from all corners of Humboldt County, providing a platform for students to share feedback, experiences, and perspectives on various issues affecting our schools and communities, as well as gain leadership skills.

Elevating student voices is crucial in shaping conversations about education and youth development. Michael Davies-Hughes, Humboldt County Superintendent of Schools, represents all the nearly 90 public schools in our diverse county, supporting 31 unique school districts and 15 charter schools with varying needs.

HCOE’s commitment lies in identifying viable, innovative, and sustainable solutions to ensure equity, enhance the quality of public education, and support the well-being and achievement of every student.

“Student voice is critical when making decisions for and about students,” said Davies-Hughes. “The opportunity to bring students to the table from all over the county will be enlightening!”

A total of 12-15 Humboldt County high school students will be selected to serve. This advisory committee will include a wide variety of youth voices including students that are underrepresented: including socioeconomically disadvantaged youth, foster youth, Native American youth, homeless youth, Black, Latinx, Asian/Pacific Islander, People of Color, houseless youth, students with disabilities, LGBTQ+ youth, and students attending alternative schools.

Council members will earn a stipend in addition to leadership skills, while shaping and advocating for students and communities. Applications due January 10, 2025.
