Eureka (May 5, 2025) – The Doris Niles Science Fair has been inspiring Humboldt County scientists for 42 years and this year inspired some artists as well. Students were offered the opportunity to design a new logo for the Science Fair. Those attending the Science Fair were asked to vote on their favorite design.
The winning design was created by Katrin Arafat of Six Rivers Charter High School. The junior is on exchange from Lebanon. “I heard about the logo contest from my physics teacher one day, and I’ve always been very invested in art and design, and decided to give this one a go!” said Arafat.
“I’m an exchange student from Lebanon and I really wanted to leave an imprint here in Humboldt in some way. I thought that sharing my art and my love for science would be the best way to do that. I was inspired by the original design and thought it was very creative in itself. I aimed to add even more color and personality to the new design and got to work adding new ideas from each science subject to each letter. Hearing that I’ve won has really made me feel accomplished in my year here in the U.S. Thank you!”

Haley Davis, Co-Coordinator of the Science Fair, said “Logo submissions were received from six schools with participants spanning from grades 4 – 11. The submissions included a wide variety of elements: bubbling beakers, trees, drips, atoms and the periodic table. Only two were created digitally, the rest were drawn by hand. These submissions show students’ willingness to design! We were very impressed with the turnout.”
