Wellness Coordinator

Position Summary

The Wellness Coordinator (hereafter Coordinator) will provide leadership and coordination for the infusion of multiple tiers of intervention and support (MTSS) within HCOE’s Court and Community Schools (CCS).  The Coordinator will collect and utilize data relevant to interventions, identify and implement Evidence Based Practices in relation to student wellness and provide support and coaching to CCS staff in regard to Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) practices.  This position provides both direct service to students and families, as well as provides training, mentoring and management of MTSS/PBIS programs as part of the Student Services Team.  The Coordinator will promote the general well-being of students working with outside agencies to provide support to families, developing and providing crisis intervention strategies to improve student success.  The Coordinator will pursue multiple funding sources, including partnerships with community agencies and grants, as well as participate in CCS’s School-based Medi-Cal billing and documentation, as appropriate.

The ideal Wellness Coordinator is organized and uses data to inform decisions and creates a bridge between school, community resources and diverse families.  Adept at navigating agency processes, they implement and monitor grants, maintain records and submit mandated reports.  Their ability to collect, interpret and analyze data informs evidence-based recommendations that enhance student and family well-being.  The Coordinator builds trusting relationships, actively listens to concerns and advocates for the underrepresented students and parents, including those experiencing homelessness, trauma and other socioeconomic and health-related challenges.  Their demonstrated commitment to inclusivity and equity ensures student receive the holistic support they need to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.  This position requires a person who possesses cultural sensitivity and a demonstrated commitment to anti-racism, equity and social justice.

Supervision Received and Exercised

The Wellness Coordinator works under the supervision of the Site Administrators and the District Superintendent.  The position may be required to supervise interns and Wellness Coaches.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts and maintains currency regarding research on early childhood trauma and its effects on an individual’s subsequent social/emotional adjustment and academic performance;
  • Assists and facilitates CCS staff in the implementation of evidenced-based programmatic changes that reflect effective trauma-informed educational practices; work will be accomplished through a variety of tasks, including case analysis and management, developing and conducting appropriate staff development, providing an array of direct services to youth and families, developing policy, coordinating with other HCOE mental health and professional development staff and collaborating with outside agencies, including mental health, social services, law enforcement and local school districts;
  • Provides consultation and professional development the CCS teachers and staff, as need dictates;
  • Develops, delivers and coordinates an array of parent education programs in the CCS Program;
  • Provides direct services to students, including individual and small group counseling;
  • Provides social skills, anger management, stress reduction or other similar instruction to students who are experiencing social/emotional/behavioral problems that interfere with their learning or the ability of others to learn;
  • Recommends new procedures and/or changes in existing procedures governing the implementation/management of the CCS Program;
  • Prepares and manages assigned budgets;
  • Actively engages in an ongoing program of professional development to maintain and improve management skills and leadership abilities;
  • Coordinates and manages PBIS/MTSS development;
  • Coordinates support services for student interventions;
  • Represents CCS at Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) hearings and other activities involving the coordination of child welfare activities involving school, home and outside service providers;
  • Supports student and family engagement activities and events, sometimes after hours.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Community resources;
  • Program planning and evaluation;
  • California Department of Education frameworks governing work scope and policies related to standards, assessment, accountability, planning, promotion and retention, curriculum and instruction, data access and confidentiality and related areas;
  • Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS), including positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS).

Ability to:

  • Motivate, challenge and guide others in the improvement of educational programs and HCOE services;
  • Build and lead high-functioning teams and facilitate groups;
  • Build trust and effective working relationships with a wide variety of educational partners;
  • Communicate with students, parents, community representatives, district personnel and other community partners, both individually and as a group;
  • Compose and comprehend written communications;
  • Flex communication style to multiple cultural environments;
  • Make formal, public presentations;
  • Utilize computer technologies including, but not limited to, electronic medical recording systems, email, word processing, spreadsheets, Power Point and educational applications;
  • Determine work assignments of staff and supervise activities;
  • Be able to work directly with all racial, ethnic, linguistic, disability and socioeconomic groups, while maintaining a kind and professional demeanor free of discrimination;
  • Demonstrate appropriate poise, tact and sound judgment while coping with a high volume of work and multiple tasks;
  • Be flexible and adaptable to changing environments and schedules.

Education and Experience

  • Must possess a valid Pupil Personnel Services credential.
  • Two (2) years of experience with multi-disciplinary teams focused on youth and family wellness (ex: School Attendance Review Board, DHHS Child Family Team meetings, IEP meetings).

Preferred Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience with successful development and implementation of professional learning workshops and trainings.
  • Experience with grant reporting guidelines.

Working Conditions

Individuals who serve in management positions provide services in the office as well as in various sites throughout the county, sometimes serving multiple sites in a single workday.  Must be willing to modify days/hours and to work additional days/hours on occasion with appropriate compensation and be willing to travel using own transportation with mileage reimbursed, or county office fleet vehicle, as the job may require.

Environmental Elements

This position will be assigned to an office setting at a district school site.  The employee will be expected to work closely with other county offices, district personnel, students, families, other professionals, outside agencies and private partners, in person, via email and on the telephone.  Assigned to settings where multiple children, school staff and families are present.  Employees may be required to walk, stand or conduct work in outdoor educational environments where there may be loud students or staff, varied temperatures, public interaction or upset staff or students.

Physical Demands

(Consideration will be given to reasonable accommodation for the following physical requirements):

  • Sufficient vision to read printed materials;
  • Sufficient hearing to conduct in-person and phone conversations;
  • Sufficient mobility to move about the county office and other sites as may be required;
  • Ability to speak in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard within normal conversation distance and on the phone and to address groups of varying sizes;
  • Physical and emotional stamina to cope with sometimes stressful situations and conditions.

Other Requirements

  • Must be fingerprinted and a satisfactory Department of Justice records check must be received by HCOE prior to employment.
  • TB testing and/or risk assessment will be required upon employment.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical (if applicable).
  • May be required to obtain first aid and CPR certificates within the first 6 to 12 months of employment.
  • May be required to drive with or without students; this position requires a California driver’s license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles, proof of insurance and possible participation in the DMV PUll Notice Program once employed.
