High School Students Get Hands-on Opportunities at Trades Day

Eureka, CA – The Humboldt County Office of Education (HCOE) partnered with the Humboldt Builders Exchange for Humboldt Trades Day on Thursday, April 24th at the Redwood Acres Fairgrounds.

There were 36 local companies and agencies partnering for the program. More than 300 high school juniors and seniors gained hands-on experience at different exhibits on mock-ups, constructing walls, tiling, welding, operating equipment, using hand and power tools, and more, all while connecting with local industry professionals from the community and gaining valuable workforce experience.

“Trades Day not only showcased the diverse opportunities available in the skilled trades but also fostered a sense of community and collaboration among attendees,” said Chris Evans, Student Assistance Counselor, Northern Humboldt Union High School District. “It’s inspiring to see so many people passionate about pursuing careers in these essential fields. The student feedback was so positive. All were very impressed and felt like they were treated with respect and enthusiasm.”

Businesses and industries at the event ranged from local construction companies to public service agencies to financial institutions.

“We had a great time!” said Jess Kernen of Kernan Construction. “I thought it was a great turnout of industry partners, and we really enjoyed the enthusiasm and interactions of the students learning on the hands-on demos.”

Chief Kurt McCray of CAL FIRE, said, “Trades Day allows local high school students to interact with CAL FIRE personnel in a hands-on working environment. It demonstrates to students that there is a large diversity of local and very rewarding career choices. CAL FIRE is honored to be a participant in Trades Day.”

Trades Day is a critical part of local Career Technical Education efforts, connecting students with opportunities as they prepare to enter the workforce.

“Trades Day in Humboldt County models how community minded collaboration can impact the workforce of tomorrow, said Colby Smart, Ed.D., Humboldt County Deputy Superintendent. “HCOE is so grateful to the businesses, individuals, and organizations that continue to invest their time and expertise so that youth can explore their interests and discover new industries. Redwood Acres continues to be an excellent partner and hub for community development.”
