Social Worker for Court and Community Schools

Job Summary

Under the general direction of, and in cooperation with, the Court and Community School (CCS) Principal and the Humboldt County Office of Education’s (HCOE) Director of Foster and Homeless Youth Education Services, the Court and Community Schools Social Worker (CCSSW) will provide leadership and coordination for case management and support services to CCS students experiencing homelessness and/or students in the foster care system.  This position is under the direct supervision of the Director of Prevention & Intervention Services and does not supervise other staff members.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is a Classified Management position.  The CCSSW must address students mental, emotional and social well-being, including challenges related to substance misuse/abuse, trauma, housing instability, food insecurity and other social determinants of health.  They will collaborate with school staff, students and families to develop, implement and evaluate individualized intervention goals and plans.  The CCSSW will provide students with the tools and resources to enhance coping skills, support their social and emotional recovery and foster a positive educational environment promoting long-term success.

Essential Duties

  • Assesses student/family needs and coordinates the interventions and supports.
  • Monitors the needs and progress of identified students in targeted areas.
  • Provides leadership within HCOE’s Foster & Homeless Youth Program and supports case worker position(s) through guidance and coordination of case management services.
  • Develops and maintains partnerships with youth-serving systems and organizations.
  • Develops, delivers and coordinates an array of student and parent education programs.
  • Assists and facilitates CCS staff in the implementation of evidence-based programmatic changes that reflect effective trauma-informed educational practices.
  • Conducts case analysis and management.
  • Develops and conducts appropriate staff development.
  • Provides an array of direct services to youth/families while developing procedures and coordinating with other HCOE departments.
  • Maintains regular contact with leadership at school sites, outside agencies, students and families.
  • Collaborates with education partners to implement identified goals and objectives.
  • Provides individual counseling services to students.
  • Assists school staff in providing services through a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) lens.
  • Supervises Bachelors and Masters level social work interns.
  • Coordinates and provides documentation for billable services.
  • Protects agency, employee and client confidentiality and safety.

  • Federal, state, and local laws, codes, regulations, requirements and current research and development pertaining to areas of assigned responsibility;
  • District policies and procedures, organizational structure and functions and personnel policies and procedures.

Ability to

  • Demonstrate competence in communicating effectively with children, parents, staff members and representatives of other agencies;
  • Modify or adapt systems and programs to meet the ongoing needs of identified student groups;
  • Sequence and integrate multiple projects and programs and develop short- and long-term goals;
  • Commit to system improvement and increasing access to mental health services for all students;
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, organizational, communication and human relationship skills;
  • Use software and technology to complete necessary tasks;
  • Deliver effective professional development.

Education and Experience

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in social work accredited by the Council of Social Work Education.
  • Two (2) years of experience with multi-disciplinary teams focused on youth and families.

Preferred Experience:

  • Direct learning support experience with at-risk youth.
  • Experience in supporting the implementation of complex programs.
  • Experience in supporting mental health programs.
  • A history of successful collaborative experience, including child welfare, mental health and probation services.

Working Conditions

With or without accommodation, this position includes prolonged periods of standing or sitting, frequent walking and occasional bending, stooping and reaching.  The employee must be able to lift, push and pull objects up to thirty (30) pounds.  Visual and auditory abilities are required to perform essential job functions.  May be required to work evenings and weekends.

Other Requirements

  • Must be fingerprinted and a satisfactory Department of Justice records check must be received by HCOE prior to employment.
  • TB testing and/or risk assessment will be required upon employment.
  • Valid California Driver’s License.
  • May be required to obtain first aid and CPR certificates within the first 6 to 12 months of employment.
  • May be required to drive with or without students.
