JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the appropriate department manager, the Student Services Specialist will work with youth, HCOE and District staff, and community partners to plan, coordinate, promote, and implement a school-based preparatory experience to promote post-secondary college and career readiness. Utilizing work readiness skills and education curriculum; participate in the introduction of developed services and/or materials through staff in-service training, parent training, and direct service delivery to students.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Develop program materials and services for project grants.
- Research and review local community resources and refer students to appropriate agencies.
- Consult and advise staff on the development and implementation of grant-supported activities.
- Develop and conduct training and in-services in all program components for teachers, administrators, and parents relating to post-secondary career and education activities.
- Provide whole class and small-group presentations, as well as one-on-one meetings using a curriculum of work-readiness skills.
- Maintain confidential records and statistics and weekly documentation of time spent with all youth program participants.
- Connect students/families to appropriate services in the community.
- Serve as an information resource for post-secondary college and career opportunities.
- Participate in individual case conferencing with teachers, parents, guidance counselors, child study team members, and administrators.
- Mentor student internship program.
- Support students with CTE work-readiness curriculum and skills.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Education, Experience, and Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- College coursework in education is desired and a minimum of two years of experience working in the field of family and youth. Previous experience working in an educational setting is desirable, but not required.
- Typical computer word processing and graphics display programs.
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
- Research, design, and make an oral presentation to small and large groups;
- Plan and implement developmentally-appropriate programs for adults and children;
- Establish and maintain effective, positive, and cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
- Maintain records, compile and verify data;
- Work effectively in the absence of supervision;
- Adapt to changing work demands;
- Manage task priorities to meet deadlines;
- Work effectively under varying degrees of stress.
Additional Requirements
- Must possess a valid California driver’s license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles or otherwise assure being able to serve multiple sites in a given day.
- Individuals who serve as Student Services Specialists must provide services in the office, as well as in various sites throughout the county, sometimes serving in multiple sites.
- In a single workday. Public speaking skills, group problem solving, leadership ability, the ability to communicate effectively in writing, the capacity to maintain a personal demeanor during periods of peak workflow, and perform efficiently within restricted time frames are critical factors for success in this position.
- Individuals who serve in this position must be willing to modify days/hours and to work additional days/hours on occasion with appropriate compensation and be willing to travel using their own transportation with mileage reimbursed, or county office fleet vehicle, as the job may require.
