If your child turns five between Sept. 2, 2024 and June 2, 2025, they are eligible to begin Transitional Kindergarten in the 2024-2025 school year.

TK Enrollment
If the child turns five between Sept. 2 and April 2, then they are eligible for Transitional Kindergarten.
Kindergarten Enrollment
If the child turns five on or before Sept. 1 then they are eligible for kindergarten.

If the three year old child’s fourth birthday occurs before Sept. 2nd, then they are eligible for Transitional Kindergarten.

Programs Available for Young Children
California State Preschool Program (CSPP)
- Ages: 3- and 4-year-olds
- What it is: Preschool program run through contracts from the State of California
- Schedule: Part-day and full-day options available
- Cost: Free or low-cost, based on income eligibility and other factors
Head Start
- Ages: 3- and 4-year-olds
- What it is: Federally-funded preschool program
- Schedule: Part-day and full-day options available
- Cost: Free, based on income eligibility
Private Pay Preschool
- Ages: 3- and 4-year-olds
- What it is: Preschool and childcare programs
- Schedule: Part-day and full-day options determined by individual preschool providers
- Cost: Fees determined by individual preschool providers
Transitional Kindergarten
- Ages: 4-year-olds, depending on birthday
- What it is: Part of the public elementary school system that takes place the year before Kindergarten
- Schedule: Part-day and full-day options, depending on local decisions
- Cost: Free, regardless of income
