Countywide Substitute Teacher Orientation November 4

(Eureka)—Citing a critical need for substitute classroom teachers in Humboldt County schools, the Humboldt County Office of Education will hold its first-ever countywide substitute teacher orientation on Thursday, November 4 from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Pre-registration is necessary to attend the training. The free event will be held on Zoom.

School districts across Humboldt County are suffering a shortage of substitute teachers. Humboldt County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Chris Hartley remarked, “Schools are open for in-person instruction. That has been seen as the backbone of our recovery.” Teachers and staff at local districts are providing many COVID-19 related safety programs and procedures. Dr. Hartley said, “As a result, we’re leaning heavily on each other. We’re recruiting for individuals in our community who are eligible to help serve in positions like substitute teachers.” He added, “Anybody who might be eligible or have the educational background to become a substitute teacher is needed to help keep our schools stay open.”

The two-hour orientation will give those interested in becoming a substitute teacher an overview of the process for becoming a substitute teacher, tips and strategies needed to be successful and the opportunity to sign up to be on the substitute teacher list for the Humboldt County districts of their choice.

Right now, many fees are being waived, however the minimum requirement to be a substitute is that you must hold a B.A. or B.S. degree or have a minimum of 90 completed units and be enrolled in a 4-year California University.
