Position Summary
The Coordinating Speech Language Therapist shall report directly to the designated program administrator and will assume responsibility for evaluating students on their speech/language ability and providing ongoing therapeutic intervention as a case manager or Individualized Education Plan (IEP) services provider. The Coordinating Speech Language Therapist is responsible for providing consultation to teachers, administrators and parents and for providing information and staff in-service training as may be necessary to facilitate IEP requirements and various related program needs.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This position is responsible for evaluating and providing clinical intervention to students in schools across the county, as assigned. In doing so, the position is responsible for supervising the activities of professionals in pursuit of either Speech Language Pathology or Speech Language Pathology Assistant certifications. This position is responsible for designing the therapeutic interventions appropriate for the population with whom they are assigned to work, as well as supporting early practitioners with the required supervision and guidance per their program and certifications.
Supervision Received and Exercised
This position is under the supervision of the assigned program administrator. This position would supervise the daily activities of Speech Language Pathology students, interns and/or clinical fellows, SLPA students, interns or fieldwork/practicum students. This position is responsible for the evaluation and supervision of Speech Language Pathology Assistants (SLPAs) assigned.

- Screens all students referred by school personnel to determine those in need of therapeutic intervention.
- Evaluates and provides direction to SLPAs.
- Provides comprehensive diagnostic workups, writes reports interpreting data and makes recommendations based upon the results for use in IEP development/modification.
- Designs, implements, monitors and reviews, as needed, appropriate IEP’s for students and records pupil progress accurately and timely.
- Establishes and maintains comprehensive student/program files as required.
- Provides a positive learning environment that stimulates student learning and maintenance of skills.
- Supports the policies and programs of the Humboldt County Office of Education and performs assigned duties consistent with school, district or office policies, regulations and procedures.
- Maintains professional competency by actively engaging in employer directed in-service activities and other similar opportunities provided to staff.
- Cooperatively engages in the professional evaluation process with supervisor to ensure ongoing professional growth and competence.
- Effectively communicates with staff, parents and agencies.
- Attends regular and special staff meetings and actively participates as a member of the educational team.
- Provides services for therapeutic intervention in various settings through the county.
- Manages and carries a caseload of students.
- Responds effectively to the input from, and coordinates tasks with, district/school personnel as required by assignment.
- Submits reimbursement claims to the LEA Billing Option Program and Statewide Multi Payer Fee Schedule when providing direct student services.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Speech-language assessments, interventions, augmentative communication technology and principles/practices in the field;
- Classroom management, behavior guidance, recordkeeping and professional written/verbal communication.
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively with children and parents, staff members and representatives of other agencies.
- Develop and implement therapeutic activities in order to improve student language, speech and communication skills.
- Manage educational programming, create curriculum, utilize instructional technology and ensure compliance with regulations.
- Evaluate and assess student speech/language skills and plan and implement individualized goals/interventions to address communication needs.
- Utilize assistive/adaptive technologies, develop procedures to diagnose/remediate communication disorders and monitor student progress.
- Effectively communicate/relate to students with special needs, deliver presentations and collaborate with others.
- Keep records and manage time in an efficient manner and work independently.
- Operate computers and software, analyze situations and apply program regulations.
Education and Experience
Minimum Required:
*Appropriate credential need upon hire
- Masters Degree with an emphasis in speech, language and hearing.
- One of the following three options:
- A valid California Speech Language Pathology Services Teaching Credential authorizing Speech, Language and Hearing OR a Clinical or Rehabilitation Services Credential with Speech, Language and Hearing authorization.
- Department of Consumer Affairs Speech Language Pathologist License from the Speech Language Pathology, Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board.
- Have and maintain ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP), at least 9 months of full-time experience as an SLP after being awarded the CCC-SLP AND meet professional development requirements related to supervision of CCC-SLP certification.
Preferred:
Experience supervising and mentoring Speech Language Pathology Assistants and Speech Language Pathology graduate students.
Working Conditions
May be required to drive or travel long distances and report to multiple worksites in a given day or workweek.
Environmental Elements
This position will be assigned to an educational setting which may be in a classroom, community or home. The employee will be expected to work closely with other County offices, District personnel, students, families, other medical professionals, outside agencies and private partners. They will be assigned school site settings where multiple children, school staff and families are present. Employees may be required to conduct work in outdoor educational environments where there may be loud students or staff, varied temperatures, public interaction or upset staff or students.
Physical Demands
There is some degree of physical ability and exertion required of all teaching positions. Over time, the physical demands of any position are subject to change. Depending upon the particular assignment, teachers could be expected to:
- Stand, sit and/or move about for sustained periods.
- Move about in non-traditional instructional environments; i.e., areas of the community.
- Communicate effectively in-person and via telephone and other electronic media to individuals and groups of varying sizes.
- Be trained in Crisis Prevention and Intervention.
- Conduct instructional programs within pre-designated break periods and time schedules.
Other Requirements
- Must be fingerprinted and a satisfactory Department of Justice records check must be received by HCOE prior to employment.
- TB testing and/or risk assessment will be required upon employment.
- Must pass a pre-employment physical (if applicable).
- May be required to obtain first aid and CPR certificates within the first 6 to 12 months of employment.
- May be required to drive with or without students; some positions may require a California driver’s license, proof of insurance and possible participation in the DMV PUll Notice Program once employed.
