Join other educators across the county in a Slow-Read Book Study of Wondrous Words: Reimagining Writers and Writing in the Elementary Classroom

In this newly reimagined edition, educator Katie Wood Ray revisits her groundbreaking work that has shaped quality writing instruction for over 25 years. Wondrous Words guides teachers on how to build classrooms where children live rich literary lives and where reading and writing sit side by side.

Through this study, teachers will:

  • Build a knowledge base for how writers learn from other writers
  • Implement writer’s workshops rooted in curiosity, dialogue, and risk-taking
  • Help students notice and name craft moves
  • Leverage the power of sound and read alouds
  • Plan lessons that center rich mentor texts (available through the HERC library)

Each chapter provides classroom examples and bridges theory into practice. Our sessions will offer practical strategies and collaborative reflection.

All participating teachers will receive a copy of the book.

Teachers who complete the full series and implement a writer’s workshop using strategies from the text will receive a stipend of $200.

Two units of extended education credit available.
