Native American Studies Model Curriculum (NASMC): Implementation Professional Development Series Offered online and open to all California educators, administrators, Indian Education Specialists, Tribal partners, and community members, this professional development series supports the implementation of the Native American Studies Model Curriculum (NASMC) in alignment with California Education Code 51226.9.

Hosted by Maggie Peters (Yurok/Karuk), NASMC Learning Specialist of Humboldt County Office of Education this series introduces over 450 TK–12+ lesson plans, primary source documents, culturally sustaining teaching strategies, and professional learning resources. Created in partnership with the Humboldt and San Diego County Offices of Education, California Tribes, Native-led organizations, and Native knowledge keepers, the NASMC centers Indigenous voices and perspectives across all grade levels.

Participants will engage with content experts, such as Dr. Cutcha Risling Baldy, writers, knowledge keepers, and education partners that created content for the NASMC to prepare educators to implement the NASMC lessons.

These sessions intend to also:

  • Honor the first peoples of California
  • Build understanding of our shared environment and histories
  • Affirm Native identities and counter misrepresentation
  • Cultivate empathy, awareness, and future partnerships rooted in respect

Participants may earn 1 or 3 continuing education units through Cal Poly Humboldt for their involvement.
Join us in fostering meaningful, accurate, and community-rooted education across California classrooms.
