Centering Youth Voice in the Age of GenAI: Engaging Students as Media Creators and Critical Analyzers Series
HCOE is partnering with Redwood Writing project and KQED to offer a unique opportunity to Humboldt County 5-12th grade teachers! In today’s increasingly complex media landscape, it is becoming more and more important for both students (and adults alike to): Access reliable information, nalyze and evaluate messages across genres and platforms, create ethically and responsibly, preserve their authentic voice!
What You’ll Gain:
- Hands-On Learning: Learn how to guide students step-by-step from pre-production to post-production. Bonus: You’ll learn by doing, taking on the role of creator so that you feel more confident and comfortable helping your students.
- Practical Tools: From planning to assessment (including creating rubrics and checklists), we’ll help you not only develop an instructional plan but also gain all the tips and tricks of engaging students in multimedia projects.
- Critical Media Literacy: Embed critical media literacy and ethical GenAI use into storytelling projects.Inspiration &
- Reach: Publish student work locally and on KQED’s Student Media Challenge platform.
Teachers of all content areas and grade levels (5–12)Educators curious about media production, GenAI, or project-based learning. No prior experience required. Teachers who agree to attend all sessions and implement audio story projects with their students will receive: a stipend of $300, a copy of The Media and Me: A Guide to Critical Media Literacy for Young People from The Censored Press and Triangle Square Books for Young Readers and a subscription to Soundtrap (web-based audio mixing platform for classroom teachers)
Option to purchase two units of continuing education credit.
