The Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program is coordinated by the Humboldt County Office of Education to assist districts in developing unique education opportunities for students in elementary and middle schools who have been identified as gifted. This year the GATE Academy, normally held at Humboldt State University early in the year, was turned into a virtual event. Check out some of the creations Humboldt County’s gifted and talented students came up with.
A virtual tour using Google Tour Builder on a town called Ballybunion.
A virtual escape room with puzzles and riddles to solve in order to escape the clutches of a mad scientist.
This was a new experience and it was super fun to make. It was a mental challenge to layer science lessons with the GATE Challenge requirements.
Ella is a scholar. She pushes to persevere through challenges and meet her goals she sets for herself. This is an amazing project that was well researched and thought through to meet the challenge’s highest expectations.
Jayden created a model of a garden using recycled materials. Jayden researched the best vegetables to grow in our area.
Jayden hopes to build a real garden at Fortuna Middle School.
Jayden conducted research on the best plants to grow in Humboldt County. He then collected recycled materials from home and school to build his model. He asked the principal if he could grow a school garden in the spring and was given permission to do so.
Virtual Tour of Japan takes one through a tour or both Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan and a few of the highlights you might experience as a tourist there.
This tour makes me want to visit Japan, especially the gardens and sushi spots.
What’s in My Garden shows a blueprint and plan for a real garden as well as a model made from objects found around the home that represent the vegetables, flowers, trees, and other garden elements.
This is a fun project. I love the way Liana shows us what the elements in the model were made from.
Kaiya shares her own experience and tips and tricks she has learned in hope of helping others.
