The 2024 HESI Program Graduates
HESI (Health Career Exploration Summer Institute) is a free two-three week summer education program sponsored by HCOE’s Career and College Resource Department. It provides 26 high school students the opportunity to discover if they are interested in a career in Healthcare.
This program is vital to our community and helps keep students motivated to pursue careers in health care. As our current health care workforce is hurting, we hope students will return to the Humboldt County Workforce.
2025 marks the 8th year of this program. Humboldt County Science Teachers Sara Dixon and Sara Mengel return to co-instruct this year’s program. Sara has been involved with HESI since the beginning, and currently teaches Biology, AP Biology, Anatomy, and Biology and Community Health at Fortuna High. Alicia, who returns for her third year as a HESI instructor, teaches Biology and Community Health as well as Biology and Geoscience at Eureka Senior High School.
Nightly homework is required as well as a final presentation to the hospital staff, school administration, teachers, family and friends.
Recommended Prerequisites: Biology & Community Health, Biology, and Chemistry
You must be at least 16 years of age to participate.
I joined HESI to gain first-hand experience working in a hospital environment with real patients. I observed how hospital staff works together to treat a patient who recovers slowly and the reward of their work when the patient is able to walk on his own.
